Heart of Darkness (1899) is a novella by Polish-English novelist Joseph Conrad about a narrated voyage up the Congo River into the Congo Free State in the heart of Africa. Heart of Darkness tells the story of Charles Marlow, a sailor who takes on an assignment from a Belgian trading company as a ferry-boat captain to lead an expedition into Africa. The novel is widely regarded as a critique of European colonial rule in Africa, whilst also examining the themes of power dynamics and morality.","image":"https:\/\/pressbooks.library.ryerson.ca\/heartofdarkness\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/224\/2021\/09\/Heart-of-Darkness-Cover.png","position":"10","author":["@type":"Person","contributor_first_name":"Joseph","contributor_last_name":"Conrad","name":"Joseph Conrad","slug":"josephconrad"],"editor":[],"translator":[],"reviewedBy":[],"illustrator":[],"contributor":[],"publisher":"@type":"Organization","name":"Ryerson University","address":"@type":"PostalAddress","addressLocality":"Toronto","datePublished":"2022-02-15","copyrightYear":"2022","license":"@type":"CreativeWork","url":"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/publicdomain\/mark\/1.0\/","name":"Public Domain","code":"Public Domain","description":"The Librivox recordings are also free of known copyright restrictions.
